An interactive social media app designed for University of Maryland students to connect, share, and grow with peers and student organizations.
PROBLEM
Students and organizations at the University of Maryland lack a centralized platform to efficiently connect, share updates, and manage campus activities, leading to missed opportunities.
Recognizing this gap, we saw this as an opportunity to help UMD students connect.
RESEARCH
Competitors fall into two categories: general social media platforms and university-focused tools.
General social media platforms are widely used and familiar to students, making them easy to adopt for campus-related connections. However, these platforms often have cluttered feeds with irrelevant content, lack privacy, and do not focus exclusively on campus-specific needs.
University-focused tools are tailored to meet campus needs with features like event tracking, organization management, and exclusive access for the university community. However, they often lack the interactive elements that make social media platforms exciting, focusing more on practicality for student organizations than social interaction with students.
TAKEAWAYS
Need for a central app exclusive to university community to give custom feed for students.
Need to have a distinction between students and student group while creating opportunities for interaction
Need to integrate student focused features centered around student and group interactions
SOLUTION
A dedicated app for UMD students and organizations would prioritize community building by fostering exclusive connections within the university while ensuring privacy and safety through restricted access.
With tailored features for students and organizations, it would enhance engagement through event promotion, interactive content, and streamlined communication designed specifically for the campus community.
